This year’s theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) is “Be Bold for Change” – a Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world - a more inclusive, gender equal world. In celebration of IWD, EDC hosted our 10th Innovation for Development Breakfast Meeting focusing on women innovators. The guest speaker for the discussion was Mr. Benjamin Kumpf, Global Innovation Advisor for UNDP based in New York. The participants included women innovators and entrepreneurs.

Mr. Kumpf highlighted important steps for innovators that they can use to stay competitive which included the use of creative enterprises toolkits and the DIY toolkit to starting a business (both resources can be found online). In addition, he spoke about the importance of prototyping your business prior to launching and also not to have a fear of changing the course of the business if you are not seeing positive returns (pivot point).

We were delighted to see so many positive and successful women innovators engaged in the discussion with Mr. Kumpf. They were able to have a candid discussion about some of their pain points and alternatives to accessing finance, which includes crowd funding. Mr. Kumpf provided some real life examples from other countries that have successfully launched innovative social enterprises with the use of the IT.

Women innovators have a critical role to play in the society. They are bold and striving for change. It is important the we constantly develop, foster, and celebrate women innovators every day of the year.
